Malcolm Douglas papers, 1809-1886 [manuscript].

Letters from Henry Douglas, U.S. Army officer, to his brothers, Andrew Douglas, curator of the New York Museum of Natural History, and Malcolm Douglas, Ohio clergyman. These letters were written from Washington Territory, describing the country, flora and fauna, and army duties, 1856; from Ohio, about his promotion, 1866; and from Kansas, about the death of his wife, 1868. Also included are letters, 1885-1886, including descriptions of Chapel Hill, the University of North Carolina, and people on campus, to Malcolm Douglas from Prof. Charles Phillips of the University; and a manuscript catalog, 1821, of the library of Benjamin Hale (1797-1863), president of Hobart College, New York.

Charles Phillips (1822-1889) was the son of James and Julia Vermeule Phillips of Chapel Hill, N.C. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina, 1841; a tutor, 1844-1854; professor of mathematics, 1854-1868 and 1875-1879; and professor emeritus, 1879-1889.
